Coach Profile: Cody Burgener

This month we’ll be sharing some Q&As with newer additions to our coaching staff. Say hi to these guys and make them feel welcome when you see them in the gym! ~ Coach LJ

How did you get into fitness/CrossFit?  Why do you like it?

I got into fitness at a very young age. I grew up with a father who is an Olympic weightlifting coach, many of you know him as Coach B (Mike Burgener of the Burgener Warm Up) and our two car garage had four platforms in it. I started doing CrossFit in 2004. I was mainly a guinea pig for my dad because he would hear of all these CrossFit workouts from other people within CrossFit. I fell in love with it right away because it incorporated the weightlifting fix I needed and helped me out in the much needed cardio portion of my workouts.  I was a baseball player growing up and CrossFit helped my improve my game tremendously.

Why do you think CrossFit is an amazing full body workout?

CrossFit is a great full body workout because of all the different exercises you do on any given day. There is never a routine. It’s always something different. Some days you have barbell work then the next day you have body weight work. I really like how CrossFit started incorporating unilateral movements to work on stabilizing muscles and not just the major muscle groups.

What’s your favorite thing about coaching?

My favorite thing about coaching is seeing the excitement people get in making the little PRs. For example, people getting their first pull up or finally being able to do a full squat snatch.

Where are you from?

I’m originally from San Diego, CA.

What’s your favorite thing to do outside of fitness?

I love being a firefighter. I recently graduated from Prince William County Fire Academy, so on the days I’m not coaching, I’m usually working at the station.

What is one thing we would be amazed to learn about you?

Something interesting about me?? Oh man, the first thing that comes to mind is that I broke my girlfriends dad’s arm on the second day I met him. He shouldn’t have tried to push me over in a bouncy house obstacle course :).
